There are two other Richmond District spots that often get mentioned in magazines and newspapers, but I haven't been to them for the earlier mentioned reasons, but I thought I'd list them here for your reference: Hong Kong Lounge (5322 Geary Blvd between 18th Ave & 17th Ave) and Ton Kiang (5821 Geary Blvd between 23rd Ave & 22nd Ave). Location: 3319 Balboa St (between 35th Ave & 34th Ave), San Francisco When I don't feel like dealing with it I go to Yank Sing which probably serves the second best! The restaurant is divey, not so clean and the service is on the rude side, but the dumplings…ah well, that makes it worth it….sometimes. Known as “xiao long bao”, meaning soup dumpling, it is made with a circular base and pinched at the top prior to steaming. As the name suggests they are known for their Shanghai dumplings (although they serve other items as well). This was a real surprise and all of it delicious.This is the one place in the Richmond I would go out of my way to visit. We had 7 different dim sum orders - 2 of the delicious shao mai - plus two diet cokes served by a young chinese girl who spoke perfect english with a smile and the total including tax was $36. And this was the first place ever where I ordered the spareribs - and anyone who eats real Chinese food knows they are not long and red/honey/soy sauce flavored, but the little ones about an inch or 1.5 with cut off bones holding them together - were the best I have had. The pork siu mai were as good as the ones next door, without a doubt. As with most Chinese restaurants, the decor and the whole aura is at best good, but the place is very clean with easy to read menus and a wide range of dim sum, even at 530 PM. We both have to say this was one of the bigger surprises in our foodie life. this place took us there - right next door to the shuttered Ton Kiang.
